Promoting a safe and productive workplace – Prohibiting the use of Drugs and Alcohol

The impact of drug and alcohol use in the workplace is being increasingly recognised by organisations specially in the manufacturing industry. Substance use negatively impacts through accidents, absenteeism, lost productivity and health costs. It also affects the workers and their families by reducing job performance and causing health, family, legal and financial problems.
Apart from posing significant safety risks it also results in impairing an individual’s ability to perform their job effectively as it can also affect cognitive abilities, coordination and reaction times leading to errors, accidents, injuries, delays and reduced productivity.
Employers or organisations also have a responsibility to ensure the safety of their employees and customers. If an employee causes an accident or injury while under the influence of drugs/alcohol, the employer or Company could be held liable. This could result in legal actions, fines and damage to the company’s reputation. Allowing alcohol in the workplace can also sometimes send a wrong message about the company culture. It can create an environment that prioritizes drinking and socialise over work and productivity.
Our Code of Conduct prohibits employees from consuming alcohol or using, possessing or distributing drugs while working or operating within Company premises (including Company vehicles) or while engaging in the Company’s business and activities. Employees should not be under the influence of alcohol or other substances while they are at work functions. There may be Company-sponsored events where the management pre-approves the serving of alcoholic beverages. In these cases, all appropriate liquor laws are followed, including laws regarding the prohibition of serving of alcohol to those under the legally permissible age. However, under all such cases, excessive drinking, intoxication and misbehavior at these events is prohibited and can be dealt with severely. The Company strictly prohibits drinking and driving as it poses a safety hazard.
At Jubilant we create an environment which enables each and every employee to think and act responsibly at work. We regularly engage in conversations on aspects of our Code through emailers, posters, workshops etc.
